Volunteer
FAQs
Please
read more to understand what it means to volunteer at Elizabeth House.
If for some reason your questions are not answered here, please e-mail
or call us.
How
do I become an EHouse volunteer?
E-mail or call us to indicate your interest
in volunteering (510.658.1380 ext.4 OR Volunteer@oakehouse.org).
Please download, print, complete and return the Volunteer
Intake Application available on our website. If you are unable
to print the application, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, who
will send you our Volunteer application and other related paperwork. Once
you complete the paperwork and return it to us, we will call you to arrange
an in-person interview, orientation and training.
Depending upon how quickly you return the paperwork and how easily the
appointment gets scheduled, the whole process could take anywhere from
1-3 weeks.
How
many hours do I need to volunteer?
EHouse
volunteers work a variety of hours, depending upon the task and the volunteer's
availability. For instance, some volunteers come every Wednesday from
4-5pm to tutor during homework club. Other volunteers come the first Monday
of each month from 6:30-8pm to assist with our community House meeting.
We will work with you to make volunteering at Elizabeth House rewarding,
flexible and enjoyable for all.
What
do volunteers do at EHouse?
Volunteers
care for kids - watch children, help with homework, share stories, mentor,
chaperone field trips, tutor, etc.
Is
there an age requirement to volunteer at EHouse?
Yes
and no. We have accommodated a range of volunteers from elementary school
age through retirement. However, one's age often defines what jobs one
can do.
For instance, we would not ask a seven year old to help hammer or watch
a group of his/her peers. On the other hand, we might ask that same seven
year old to help in our garden (with supervision), read books with younger
kids, or go on a field trip to the zoo with us.
